Clara's Invitation
Dollman, skipper of the Medusa, has every reason to feel nervous when he spots an Englishman, Davies, sailing nearby. Dollmann's secret is that he is secretly working for the Germans against the English, and thus an Englishman might expose him and cause him problems. In the event this is exactly what happens. In order to get information he sends Clara his daughter to invite Davies. However Clara herself is charming and practical and there is an instant attraction between her and Davies. This love interest adds some sweetness to the bitterness of a story in which violence is always only just round the next headland. The Frisian coast is also like this - beautiful but treacherous.
