Ancient Egyptian Empire

Settlements in Egypt can be traced back to as early as 6000 B.C. Mud bricks were the preferred building material for ancient Egyptian dwellings. For most ancient Egyptians, farming was the principal occupation, with wheat being the staple crop. The Nile River played a crucial role in Egypt's development, flooding annually to irrigate the crops. During periods of flooding when farmers could not tend to their fields, they contributed to the construction of pyramids, which served as tombs for the Pharaohs, the rulers of ancient Egypt. Of these Pharaohs, Cleopatra stands out as one of the most renowned female pharaohs of the Egyptian empire. The Sphinx stood guard over these pyramids. Hieroglyphics, the Egyptians' system of writing, adorned the tombs and were also inscribed on papyrus paper.

The ancient Egyptian territories consisted of Upper and Lower Egypt, which were unified around 3100 B.C. Lower Egypt, closer to the Mediterranean, was named for its lower elevation, with the Nile descending from the highlands to the sea-level lowlands. Ancient Egyptian astronomers created a calendar that, similar to the modern version, contained 365 days. From 1570 to 1069 B.C., Thebes was the principal capital of the Egyptian empire.

The ancient Egyptians worshipped over 2,000 deities, with Ra as the sun god and Anubis as the god of the underworld, among others. Mummification was their method of preserving bodies for the afterlife. Anubis was believed to supervise the mummification process, weigh the souls, and escort the deceased into the afterlife.
