Narlikar and Stephen
Jayant Narlikar Stephen (Narlikar shows Stephen Hoyle's latest paper) A time-symmetric new theory of gravity. It's brilliant. Hoyle at his best. Did you start as his PhD student? (suspecting Hawking's motives in asking) Are you after my job? (still interested to know) Did you? (still mistrustful of Stephen) Are you? No (enthusiastically) He's a great scientist. His work on the production of uranium inside stars is - what's the word... Beautiful. And so is this. I do the checking. It should be refereed by a committee but Hoyle doesn't have time (interested) Can I see it? (Stephen begins to read the paper Narlikar has to leave) (Narlikar is fretting to leave...) I have to go. (absorbed in the paper) Just give me a few more minutes. (more insistently) I have to go now. (seeing a possibility for his work...) Leave it with me. (a bit hesitant) OK, but don't... (mockingly) What? Eat it (as he leaves...) Just leave it on my desk Jayant Narlikar Stephen Hoyle [Stephen has checked the paper all night...] (Stephen replaces the paper at last and slumps into a chair. Just at this moment, Narlikar arrives) (Noticing Stephen's disheveled state...) Up early? Are you alright? Yes, fine. Yes, fine. (arrives; in a business-like way to Narlikar) So the Royal Society this afternoon? You're giving a paper today? (gesturing) This!
