The parts of the EarthOnline version The atmosphere, hydrosphere and geosphere by Alba Fuente 1 The atmosphere 2 The hydrosphere 3 The geosphere it absorbs the heat from the Sun and keeps it inside the atmosphere helping the Earth to stay warm It is the air that plants and animals breathe to survive It is the mixture of gases that surrounds the Earth. It is made up mostly of nitrogen (78%) and oxygen (21%). It is divided up into 5 major layers: exosphere, thermosphere, mesosphere, troposphere and stratosphere It is all water on the Earth. Water covers most of the world´s surface. The oceans are big masses of salt water. The lakes are masses of fresh water which are accumulated in the land. The rivers are continuous strands of fresh water. The ground water is the sum of the water that is below the Earth´s surface. The clouds are accumulations of small drops that are situated in the troposphere. It is the solid part of the Earth. It assembles 80 % of the terrestrial mass. It is characterized to have the highest temperatures, pressure, density, volume and thickness. It is compound by Iron (35%), Oxygen (25%) and Silicon (18%). The crust is the outside layer. The mantle is the middle layer. The core is the inner layer.
