Bildungsroman, coming-of-age, maturation

usually a person between the ages of 10 years old to 19 or so

Childhood innocence has already been left behind.

It is a story that refers to someone growing up morally, spiritually or emotionally.

Depicts the conflict that forces the character to face their own inner demons or shortcomings.

The protagonist declares his outer motivations and his/her pursuit of those goals begins. (motivation is what drives the character’s actions towards the goal)

The protagonist is presented with a choice that will either make life even worse (i.e. the introduction of the bully in The Karate Kid), or will hold the promise of some escape from the pain (Leslie moves into the neighbourhood in Bridge to Terabithia)

They find their inner strength, face down their fear and learn they can rely on themselves. The character must stand up for himself and for who he is. Usually in defiance of parents or figures of authority.

Something has happened that has made the character feel lost or stuck in a world over which they have little control. An example of this is that in The Hunger Games, Katniss's father has died.

The world is as inhospitable as ever, but the protagonist is now equipped to deal with it.
