The Governor is the head of the armed forces of the Commonwealth—the Virginia National Guard.
The Governor makes sure that the laws and policies are faithfully executed by overseeing the state bureaucracy. He/she appoints cabinet secretaries, heads of various state agencies, and members of policy-setting boards and commissions.
As chief executive officer the governor communicates with other states, the national government, and foreign states.
The Governor sets the legislative agenda for the General Assembly.
The Governor serves as the head of his/her political party in Virginia.
