Has the patient expressed prior preferences (e.g. Advanced directives)? If the patient cannot make his/her own decisions, who has the authority to decide for the patient? How is quality of life defined by the patient? What kind of quality of life will the patient have with/without treatment? Is death inevitable? What comfort measures are available? What is the patient’s subjective acceptance of that quality of life? What is achievable for the patient’s desires and priorities? Whose other interests are affected? Are there cultural/religious factors that might influence treatment decisions? What costs -economic, emotional, societal - are involved? What does the law say?
