The cell is preparing for division. Chromosomes are not accepted except as chromatin. It can be divided into three sub-stages.
It is considered a different stage to the cell cycle. The cells in this stage are not divided nor are they in preparation for division.
The cell increases its size and increases the number of organelles and other molecules
Duplication of DNA and associated proteins
The structures necessary for division begin to show; the chromosomes begin to condense.
