If we notice something that repeats in the text we can analyze that pattern to figure out what it means!
Making predictions keeps us focused on what we're reading and keeps our minds from wandering
*If you think the author is describing something, try drawing it or visualizing the description in your head
*Retelling what we've read forces us to put the pieces in order, and helps us figure out if they need to be moved
You may need to read slower to catch everything, or faster so that your mind doesn't wander.
*Try to think of something in the text that you recognize, or that reminds you of something else
Sometimes we miss or forget crucial details. It can help to re-read and see if we catch something new the second time
Text features and punctuation can tell us which ideas go together, and which ideas are separate
Use dictionaries for new words, atlases for places, etc.
