Het bekken van de Middellandse Zee bevat veel eilanden . De kusten zijn er sterk ingesneden . De inhammen vormen ideale aanlegplaatsen voor schepen . De eilanden zijn handige wegwijzers voor zeevaarders . Vooral het vasteland rond de is erg bergachtig en heeft slechts kleine vruchtbare vlakten . Door het bergachtige reliëf zijn er weinig contacten over het land en blijven de gemeen - schappen klein . De bewoners gebruiken vooral de om handel te drijven en te vissen . Het bekken heeft minder eilanden , een grotendeels bergachtig binnenland en aan de kust grote vruchtbare vlakten . Daar kunnen de bewoners voldoende voedsel produceren . Ze wagen zich daarom minder op zee . Het bekken heeft weinig eilanden om zich op te oriënteren . De kust is er ook minder ingesneden , zodat er minder aanlegplaatsen zijn voor dan in het oostelijke bekken .
