There is no conclusive ( define ) for superstitions , but in general , it can be said that superstitions are a set of ( believe ) , shared by members of a given culture , in supernatural forces . Whether their outcomes are positive or negative , it is widely accepted today that superstitions defy scientific ( know ) , because they tend to link completely unrelated practices , objects and events . Research shows that a considerably substantial number of people see themselves as somewhat superstitious , and that these convictions tend to gain relevance and ( strong ) whenever a community faces times of change , crisis , and social uncertainties . Take , for instance , what happened in the late 17th century in North America . The North
American ( extend ) of the Nine Year War , also known to colonists as King William ? s war , had an overwhelming impact on the regions of Upstate New York , Nova Scotia and Quebec . At the time , a number of war refugees fled to the county of Essex , adding a strain on the pre - existing battles for money and wealth between the local elites of Salem Village ( present - day Danvers , Massachusetts ) . According to many historians , the tensions and stress of the conflict fueled the famous witch trials that started in 1692 in Salem , Massachusetts . When the village ? s Reverend Samuel Parris ? daughter Elizabeth , and his niece Abigail started
to act out , screaming at each other and making unfamiliar sounds , it was a matter of time before the gullible , uneducated , citizens of Salem saw the events as the ( work ) of the devil . Under pressure from local authorities , the girls blamed three other women , a Caribbean slave named Tituba , a local homeless beggar named Sarah Good , and an impoverished elderly woman named Sarah Osborne . Soon after Tituba ? s ( confess ) , a wave of hysteria and paranoia , reinforced by the religious extremism of Puritan values , led to the ( incarcerate ) of hundreds of women , out of which 19 were hanged . Due to the devastating effects of the trials and ( convict ) , the governor
of Massachusetts ended up dissolving the court and pardoning everybody who had been charged with witchcraft in 1693 . Even though the trials were considered unlawful in 1702 , and families had their good names restored alongside a financial ( restitute ) of £600 , it was only in the mid - twentieth century that the state of Massachusetts officially recognized its errors and apologized in 1957 , 250 years later . These events have played a considerable role in American pop culture and the name Salem
is still widely linked to tales of witches , supernatural forces , and superstitions . Based on these historical accounts , famous American playwright Arthur Miller wrote The Crucible in 1953 .
