The South has a climate that is generally and sunny , with long , hot , humid summers , and mild winters , and heavy rainfall . It has a climate ideal for agriculture and the ability to grow many different crops in large amounts . During the 1800s , the period after the Revolution and before the Civil War , the Southern economy was based on . Rather than grow several crops , farmers would or focus on growing a single crop . Crops such as cotton , , rice , sugar cane and ( a dye used to dye fabric ) were grown in great quantities . These crops were known as crops , ones that were raised to be sold or exported for a profit , usually to the North or other countries . They were raised on large farms , known as , which were supported by labor .
So , In contrast to the North , the south remained in the years before the War . Unlike in the , the focus on agriculture caused the the Southern population to grow slowly because it failed to attract . In the south , wealth continued to be invested in and slaves and its economy was dependent chiefly on its cotton crop grown with slave .
