The Global Climate Coalition ( GCC ) was founded in 1987 . It was a group that included some of the most powerful oil companies . Among its members were British Petroleum ( BP ) , Royal Dutch Shell , Dupont , and the Ford motor company . In 1997 , just before the Kyoto conference on Climate Change , it started a massive advertising campaign . The purpose of this campaign was to stop the United States from agreeing to reduce gas . The ads tried to frighten Americans . One of the things these ads said was that if the use of was , the price of gasoline would go up 50 cents a gallon . There was no truth to this , but the campaign was successful .
