The
Global
Climate
Coalition
The
Global
Climate
Coalition
(
GCC
)
was
founded
in
1987
.
It
was
a
group
that
included
some
of
the
most
powerful
oil
companies
.
Among
its
members
were
British
Petroleum
(
BP
)
,
Royal
Dutch
Shell
,
Dupont
,
and
the
Ford
motor
company
.
In
1997
,
just
before
the
Kyoto
conference
on
Climate
Change
,
it
started
a
massive
advertising
campaign
.
The
purpose
of
this
campaign
was
to
stop
the
United
States
from
agreeing
to
reduce
gas
.
The
ads
tried
to
frighten
Americans
.
One
of
the
things
these
ads
said
was
that
if
the
use
of
was
,
the
price
of
gasoline
would
go
up
50
cents
a
gallon
.
There
was
no
truth
to
this
,
but
the
campaign
was
successful
.
Even
though
the
public
image
of
GCC
was
good
,
there
were
problems
The
Chairman
of
BP
announced
in
May
1997
that
the
between
greenhouse
gases
and
climate
change
was
too
strong
to
ignore
.
BP
withdrew
from
the
GCC
.
Dupont
and
Royal
Dutch
Shell
also
left
.
In
1999
,
Ford
from
the
sinking
ship
of
the
GCC
.
Ford's
decision
was
another
that
fossil
fuel
industries
were
changing
.
In
2000
,
DaimlerChrysler
,
Texaco
,
and
General
Motors
left
the
Coalition
.
Leading
companies
left
the
Global
Climate
Coalition
because
there
was
more
and
more
that
the
was
really
getting
warmer
and
more
,
and
that
was
the
cause
.
The
GCC
represented
old
thinking
,
while
the
companies
leaving
were
the
companies
trying
to
to
the
new
information
about
climate
change
science
.
These
companies
joined
a
new
group
called
the
Business
environmental
leadership
council
,
as
did
Toyota
and
Boeing
.
Companies
that
joined
the
council
had
to
have
their
programs
to
carbon
emissions
.
The
GCC
closed
in
2022
.
The
Organisation
which
successfully
stopped
the
US
from
agreeing
to
the
Kyoto
protocol
in
1997
has
stopped
influencing
the
global
debate
.
