Historians believe that humans first developed agriculture between 10 , 000 and 15 , 000 years ago in a number of different regions including the Middle East and China . The ability to crops and raise animals was because it allowed communities to produce more than enough food . As a result , populations could increase and people could live longer lives . Surprisingly , though , agriculture had some negative impacts , too . One was that agriculture caused humans and animals to live more closely together than ever before . Many scholars have argued that this was to human health because people began to catch ? and die from ? diseases that originally only affected animals . These diseases the benefit of longer life that agriculture provided , at least to some extent . Another disadvantage is that farming requires much more physical effort than other lifestyles . So the first farmers had a hard life in many ways . Despite these issues , which continue to this day , the benefits of agriculture are so great that farming is clearly here to stay , and nobody would that humans return to a hunting and gathering lifestyle .
