About this activity

Making a Study Guide for Ancient Sumer
My name is Alex. I am in the sixth grade. Today, I will make a study guide about Ancient Sumer.
Ancient Sumer was a very important civilization. To create my study guide, I will learn a few things about Sumer that will help me understand it better.
What is a Stable Food Supply?
I know that a society has a stable food supply if it has enough food for its people. This means that everyone can eat and be healthy. If I remember this, I will do well on my test!
Understanding Social Structure
In Sumer, there was a social structure. This is the way a civilization is organized. It tells us about different jobs and levels in society. I feel important when I learn about how people worked together in Sumer.
Important Inventions
One important invention that helped Sumer was the plow. The plow made it easier to farm and grow food. I can think of how inventions help us today, too!
The Role of Scribes
Scribes were very important in the Sumerian government because they wrote down laws. If I want to be a good student, I can also practice writing and keeping track of my assignments.
Living After the Stone Age
The Sumerians lived after the Stone Age. They built brick houses and made beautiful pottery. I feel fascinated by how they created their homes.
Music and Entertainment
Drums, pipes, and lyres were used for entertainment. I enjoy music, and it’s nice to know that people in Sumer liked to have fun, too!
Chariots in War
The invention of wheels made it possible for Sumerian armies to use chariots in war. I think about how wheels are important in many things we use today, like cars!
Keeping Records
Sumerians made records on clay tablets. This helped them keep track of things they exchanged. I can keep my own records to help with my studies.
When I look at pictures of Sumer, I can see people at a banquet and workers bringing food. I can remember the seven characteristics of civilization: stable food supply, arts, social structure, technology, government, written language, and religion.
Why is this important?
If I understand these concepts, I will do well on my assessment about Ancient Sumer. If I need help, I can ask my teacher or a friend. It feels great to prepare and learn about ancient civilizations!
I am excited to create my study guide and share it with my class
mates!
