La anatomía requiere un vocabulario clínico que defina la posición, movimientos, relaciones y planos de referencia.
Por convención, las descripciones anatómicas del cuerpo humano se basan en el individuo de pie en "POSICIÓN ANATÓMICA".
Esta posición se define como:
De frente, con los pies paralelos relajados, los miembros superiores a los lados del cuerpo, las palmas de las manos orientadas hacia adelante y la mirada al horizonte.
