The Alps protected the Italian Peninsula from European invasion.

Sardinia was important for its rich agricultural lands (for growing grain) and mineral resources (such as silver and copper).

Corsica was important for extending Rome's power over the Mediterranean region.

Known as "Rome's Breadbasket," Sicily was a major source of grain for Rome.

The Appenines protected Rome from invasion from the east.

Mt. Vesuvius is famous for erupting and destroying the city of Pompeii.

The Tiber River was an important source of water for Rome. It also allowed the Romans to easily transport goods to the Mediterranean Sea.

The Mediterranean Sea allowed Rome to travel, trade, and conquer other regions easily.
