IB TEXT: SET OF GUIDELINES STRUCTURE

IB TEXT: SET OF GUIDELINES STRUCTUREOnline version

Find the elements expected in a set of guidelines IB text type.

by Mary Catherine SOTIL BROWN
1 Rationale 2 Title or guidelines heading 3 Use of imperatives. 4 Sections or sub-titles 5 Numeration, list or bullet points 6 Formal to semi-formal language 7 Conclusion

Explanation

It usually explains why the guidelines are needed and how they relate.

Unlike other texts, a guideline heading must be specific and direct.

Imperatives are just the base form of the verbs ( No -ing, or to). Make sure you use DON'T if the sentence is negative. We use them to give the instructions or suggestions.

Subtitles don't have to be in imperatives. They're usually short and specific, though.

There is no difference you may choose which you want to use, but numbers, bullet points, letters, etc are a MUST.

Language may vary from formal to semi-formal language as in the example. Emojis, double exclamation marks or others are expected. Academic language is not necessary.

Conclusions are not expected, since the aim of a set of guidelines is to give instructions or suggestions. Yet, it is acceptable to close the list explaining the benefits or the positive aspects expected after following the guidelines.
