Jamie A bit, but I’m not sure about all the details. Can you explain? Alex Sure! It all starts in the mouth ( Mechanical Digestion),where digestion begins with chewing and saliva. Salivary amylase begins to digest: starch to maltose Jamie Right! And then it goes down the esophagus, right? Alex Exactly! From there, it enters the stomach where acids break down the food.(Chemical Digestion )Hydrochloric acid: Maintains an optimum pH of 1–2 for pepsin and rennin, and kills bacteria. Rennin :Produced in infants to clot soluble protein in milk so the protein is retained in the stomach. Pepsin:Begins to digest: protein peptides (shorter chains of amino acids). Jamie I’ve heard the stomach can hold quite a bit before it moves to the intestines. Alex Yes! The small intestine is where most nutrients are absorbed. Pancreatic juice: Cells in the pancreas. It enters the duodenum via the pancreatic duct. • Pancreatic amylase: Continues to digest starch maltose • Trypsin: Continues to digest protein peptides • Pancreatic lipase: Digests lipids fatty acids and glycerol Intestinal juice: Cells in the walls of the small intestine. Jamie And what about the large intestine? I know it’s important too. Alex It absorbs water and forms waste for elimination. It's crucial for hydration!
