Explanation

The epidermis is the superficial most layer of the skin. This layer is composed only of cells and will mainly function in protection. Melanocytes will be found in this layer to produce melanin, which is the pigment of the skin that will protect from UV rays.

The dermis is the second layer and is considered to be the "True Skin". The majority of the skin's structures can be found in this layer.

The hypodermis is the bottom most layer of the skin and is composed of adipose tissue (fat)

Blood vessel that will carry waste products away from the skin.

Blood vessel that will bring oxygen and nutrients to the skin.

The sebaceous gland will secrete sebum (oil) into a hair to lubricate the skin.

The arrector pili muscle contracts to cause the hair to stand on end and form goose bumps.

Nerve fibers will pick up sensation on the skin and send this information via afferent neurons to the brain.

The hair root is located deep with the dermis. This is where a hair will begin to develop from.

Sudoriferous gland will secrete sweat onto the surface of the skin in order to help cool the skin off.

The hair shaft is the portion of the hair that is found above the skin.

Bottom most layer of the epidermis. This is where new skin cells are made.

The stratum corneum is the top most layer of the epidermis. This is where flat, dead, protective cells, filled with keratin are located.
