1 Pinna (Auricle) 2 External Auditory Canal 3 Tympanic Membrane 4 Ossicles 5 Auditory (Eustachian) Tube 6 Cochlea 7 Semicircular Canals 8 Vestibulocochlear Nerve (CNVIII)

Explanation

The pinna (auricle) is located on the lateral portion of the head. The pinna will capture sound waves to send to the external auditory canal.

Sends soundwaves from the pinna to the tympanic membrane.

The tympanic membrane (ear drum) is part of the outer ear and will vibrate in response to sound waves.

The ossicles are the bones of the middle ear and are made up of the malleus, incus, and stapes. These three bones will amplify sound before taking it to the oval window.

The auditory tube will equalize pressure between the middle ear and the nasopharynx.

The cochlea is located in the inner ear and is considered to be the receptor organ for hearing.

The semicircular canals are located in the inner ear and are considered to be the receptor organ for balance.

The vestibulocochlear nerve will carry auditory and equilibrium information to the temporal lobe of the brain.
