The oral cavity serves as the primary resonator in the vocal apparatus and is arguably the most fundamental for speech and vocal production. This highly adjustable cavity extends from the vocal folds to the lips and can dramatically alter its size, shape, and configuration through movements of the tongue, jaw, lips, and soft palate. What makes the oral cavity so fundamental is its extraordinary flexibility.

During breathing, they are open, but for speaking or singing, they close and vibrate, modulating the airflow to create sound. The pitch of the voice is controlled by the length, tension, and position of the vocal cords, similar to a violin string. After sound is produced, the vocal tract (mouth, nose, pharynx) acts as a resonator and articulator, shaping the sound into recognizable speech.

It is divided into three regions: nasopharynx, oropharynx, and hypopharynx (laryngopharynx). Pharyngeal resonance creates a fuller, more projected vocal quality by providing additional acoustic amplification.

The paranasal sinuses (frontal, maxillary, ethmoid, and sphenoid) are not functional vocal resonators despite common misconceptions. These cavities lack direct openings to the vocal tract that would allow them to significantly influence vocal acoustics. While the maxillary sinuses can be connected to the nasal cavity through small openings, research shows they primarily add damping rather than useful resonance to the vocal system. Any vibrations felt in the sinus areas during phonation are sympathetic responses rather than active acoustic contributions
