1 Wollumbin (Mount Warning) 2 Uluru 3 Budj Bim Cultural Landscape 4 Kandimalal (Wolfe Creek Crater) 5 Great Barrier Reef

Explanation

Wollumbin is located in the Tweed Valley. During the Miocene epoch between 20 and 24 million years ago, the Indo-Australian tectonic plate passed over a hot spot deep below the earth’s crust. This led to a period of volcanic activity during which a chain of volcanoes erupted along the coast of eastern Australia, extending from the Atherton Tableland in North Queensland to Victoria. Geologically, it takes the form of a huge erosion caldera centred on Mount Warning. The mountain has been sacred to the Bundjalung people and other Aboriginal inhabitants for thousands of years.

Uluṟu rises 348 metres above the surrounding plain. That’s higher than the Eiffel Tower in Paris and the Eureka Tower in Melbourne. Ayers Rock (which we now call Uluṟu) was first declared a national park in 1950. In 1985, after more than 35 years of campaigning, Aṉangu were recognised as the Traditional Owners of the park and handed back the deeds to their homelands. The Aṉangu People have lived and managed this Country for many millennia. Archaeological evidence shows that Aboriginal people have inhabited Central Australia for more than 30,000 years.

Volcanic eruptions initially formed Budj Bim (formerly Mount Eccles) around 27,000 years ago in South-Eastern Australia. The volcano erupted at least 10 times, with the most recent eruption dating to about 7,000 years ago. The eel trap systems are one of the oldest and most extensive aquaculture systems in the world, dating back more than 6,600 years. They were built and are maintained by the Gunditjmara People. Budj Bim was recognised as a UNESCO World Heritage site in 2019 and is a living cultural and ecological system of survival, renewal, and care for Country.

This imposing feature is located about 145km from Halls Creek in the Kimberley region of Western Australia. The crater's rim has rusty balls of rock (shale balls) scattered around it which are the remains of an iron meteorite that exploded when it collided with Earth about 300,000 years ago. Kandimalal is recognised in stories, personal experience, knowledge, art and song by Djaru and other Indigenous people.

Coral reefs are limestone structures (Calcium carbonate structures) produced by living organisms. The Great Barrier Reef began forming around 20 million years ago during the Miocene epoch. As the sea levels rose and fell over millennia, the reef's structure evolved into its current form. Well before the reef emerged, the land on which it now stands was part of the Australian continent, connected to the mainland. First Nations People interacted with the Great Barrier Reef for thousands of years before it became submerged. They had an intricate knowledge of the reef's marine life and coastal resources, which they used for sustenance and trade. The reef offered a diverse array of seafood, including fish, crustaceans, and shellfish, which were an essential part of their diet.
