Figure 9 (below). The LARGE INTESTINE is the final segment of the alimentary canal, and partially frames the small intestine (a), which empties into it. The large intestine includes the ASCENDING COLON (b), TRANSVERSE COLON (c), DESCENDING COLON (d), SIGMOID COLON (e), RECTUM (f), and ANAL CANAL (j). The distal end of the small intestine (ileum) flows into the side of the large intestine (g). Inferior to that ileocecal junction is a small pouch called the CECUM (h). Attached to it is the APPENDIX (i).
