Bio Sparks: Cells in Action

Bio Sparks: Cells in ActionOnline version Two students explore cellular energy basics. by Chrissy McCormack Alex Hey Jordan, today we’re cracking how cells power themselves—starting with photosynthesis and its two stages. Jordan Cool! I recall the light-dependent reactions, where light and water help make energy carriers like ATP and NADPH. Alex Right, and then the Calvin cycle uses those to build glucose. It’s like a two-step energy factory. Jordan Speaking of energy, what about cellular respiration? Glycolysis starts with glucose and yields pyruvate and some ATP. Alex Exactly, glycolysis needs enzymes and yields 2 ATP net, then the pyruvate heads into the Krebs cycle and ETC for more energy. Jordan And in anaerobic conditions, fermentation can regenerate NAD+—lactic acid or alcohol fermentation depending on the organism. Alex Yep, two pyruvate acids become lactate or ethanol with CO2 release in fermentation. It keeps glycolysis running when oxygen is scarce. Jordan So in short: energy capture happens in stages across photosynthesis and respiration, with glycolysis as the gateway. Alex Nice summary! And the full respiration pathway yields up to 32–34 ATP from the ETC, depending on conditions. Jordan This all makes biology feel like a well-orchestrated energy orchestra.
