Explanation

The largest gas giant, the immense gravity of Jupiter prevents space debris from easily entering into the orbits of the four inner planets. If it was just 80 times its own mass, it would become a star of its own! (for Earth, that would be 23,000 times)

Mars is the red planet, and the most likely goal for the start of human colonisation of space. However, its is a very cold planet which receives a lot of radiation, which proves very difficult to sustain life in.

Earth has the perfect conditions to have all three states of water, which in turn supports life as we know it. It's not just a question of temperature - Earth's size, atmosphere, magnetosphere, orbit, rotation and the protection from asteroids it receives from Jupiter all contribute to the creation of the 'blue marble'.

Depending on which stage of orbit Venus is in, Venus is called the morning or evening star. It can be seen as a very bright dot in the sky that appears just before the sun rises or just after it sets, gaining the name 'star' despite being a planet.

Astronomers have learnt so much about the universe by observing which objects in the night sky stay the same and which ones change. Out of all of the objects, Mercury changes the most. Its orbit around the sun is merely 88 day - that means that more than 4 Mercurian years pass every 1 Earth year!

The sun is also a star! That is, it's a huge mass of different elements - mainly hydrogen and helium - crashing into each other with so much force that it creates light and heat for all planets in the solar system.

Saturn is one of the most recognisable planet dues to its elaborate ring system. The ring system is formed mostly out of ice and rocks that entered orbit within the Roche limit, that is, the distance at which the difference in the forces of gravity and total gravity cause smaller objects to be ripped apart and disintegrate to pieces.

Uranus is the 'tilted' giant due to having an axial tilt of about 97°. Because its orbit around the sun is about 80 year, this means about half of each Uranian year is spent with one hemisphere in complete darkness.

Neptune is the furthest planet knows yet, and its discovery was no simple task. The only human operation to ever visit Neptune was the Voyager 2 probe, which flew by Neptune and its moon Triton in 1989, confirming the existence of six new Neptunian moons.
