Explanation

Umbrella appellation, whites mainly from Malvasia di Candia, can be dry, frizzante, or passito. Reds are Barbera/Bonarda (Croatina).. ** Ortrugo-Colli Piacentini must be 90% Ortugo grape. Still, frizzante, spumante (dry or semi-dry).

Barbera-Bonarda (Croatina) blend. Named after the roman jug (gutturnium). Mainly frizzante style w/ slight RS) Superiore (6m) and Riserva (2y, 6m oak) are always still and dry.

mainly frizzante (white/red) and Lambrusco. Nothing super exciting to note here.

Large area from Reggio Emilia, mainly the flat plain to the north and hills to the south. Bianco, Rosati, Rosso (Spumante/Frizzante and Novello). Very easy drinking and light. Highly exported.

Mainly frizzante styles (Bianco from Malvasia/Spergola) (Rosso Lambruschi, Malbo, Montericco). Most interesting is Bianco Classico based on Spergola.

Focused on Salamino from Santa Croce (duh), flat plains north of Modena. Rosato or Rosso Frizzante/Spumante

Mainly Lambrusco (encompasses other Lambrusco regions), also includes white wines. Can have other grapes rather than Lambrusco grapes; Bianco (Grechetto, Montuni, Trebbiano), Rosati, Rosso, all being Frizzante/Spumante.

Sobara grape, hamlet of Sobara near Modena, must be min 60% Sobara (max 40% Salamino**). In the plains, delicate and fragrant, mountains are more structured. Highest production of all of Lambrusco. Rosato or Rosso Frizzante/Spumante

Grasparossa (boldest variety), grown in hills south of Modena. Rosato or Rosso Frizzante/Spumante

North of Bologna. Bianco is from Albana and Trebbiano, or a varietal based on Montù.

Colli Bolognesi DOC is hills south of bologna. Mainly still Rosso/Bianco from international varieties. There is the subzone of “Bologna”. ** For Colli Bolognesi Pignoletto DOCG (there’s only 2!!), made with Grechetto Gentile (aka Alionzina, aka Pignoletto before 2014), must be 85%. Frizzante/Spumate, but also Superiore as still wine. Classico Superiore must be 95% Grechetto Gentile.

//Purple Line// Was supposed to be Pignoletto DOC, but EU shot it down. Always Grechetto Gentile (aka Alionzina, aka Pignoletto before 2014), Still, sparkling, passito, or late harvest. Three sub zones: Modena, Reno, Colli d’Imola.

//Purple Gradient// Italy’s first what DOCG!! Hot takes!! Must be 95% Albana grape, grown on the hills east of Bologna towards Adriatic. Can by Dry -> Passito (sweet are the best, dry are improving, Riserva has Botritus)

On the Adriatic Coast, mainly sandy soil and called “Vini della Sabbie” Mainly Bianco/Rosso frizante from either Fortana grape or Trebbiano/Sauv B.

Costal of the Romagna Hills. Not important, focus on some Trebbiano, Sangio, Chard, Sauv B. Rosso/Bianco with varietal labeling.

Big ol' catch all for a lot of subdesignations.... Romagna Sangiovese: Can be Superiore, Riserva, Novello, and Passito / Romagna Albana Spumante: from dried Albana grapes (tank or trad method) (Geographic zone is the same as Romagna Albana, but it’s not DOCG.) /// Romagna Cagnina: Sweet, red wine based on Terrano** grapes. /// Romagna Pagadebit: white wine based on Bombino Bianco, still/frizzante and dry to sweet. /// Romagna Trebbiano: based from Trebbiano. Still/sparkling, dry to off-dry. Often consumed on the Rivera Romagnola.

//Green Dashes Costal of the Romagna Hills. Not important, focus on some Trebbiano, Sangio, Chard, Sauv B. Rosso/Bianco with varietal labeling.
