The Ultimatum: On 31 January 1930, Mahatma Gandhi sent a letter to Viceroy Irwin with 11 demands representing all Indian classes. He gave a deadline of 11 March before launching civil disobedience. Symbolism of Salt: Gandhi chose salt because it was a basic necessity for both rich and poor. He viewed the British tax and monopoly on salt as the "most oppressive face" of colonial rule. The Journey: After Irwin refused to negotiate, Gandhi began a 240-mile march from Sabarmati Ashram to the coastal town of Dandi. The Volunteers: He was accompanied by 78 trusted volunteers. The journey took 24 days, averaging 10 miles per day. Civil Disobedience: On 6 April 1930, Gandhi reached Dandi and ceremonially violated the law by manufacturing salt from boiled seawater, officially sparking THE CIVIL DISOBEDIENCE MOVEMENT.
