Jamie Right, a random sample gives everyone an equal chance of being selected from the larger population. Alex So if we look at around 200 algebra students, we’re trying to reflect the whole city’s mix? Jamie Exactly. The idea is that the sample should be representative of the larger group. Alex But there can be bias if the sample isn’t diverse. How do researchers fix that? Jamie They use random assignment to split participants into experimental and control groups to avoid bias. Alex So the goal is to generalize findings from the sample to the larger population without bias? Jamie Yes, and with a sufficiently large sample, the results should be more reliable. Alex I see the figures (a) and (b) in the page—one shows a city scene and the other a class with a screen.
