Blues Music MapOnline version Blues Music Map by Lauren Hill 1 North Atlantic Ocean - Africans were taken as slaves and brought to the USA on sailing ships 2 Mississippi Delta - The Mississippi Delta and surrounding southern states had the most prevalent slave trade due to the expanse of fields and crops. This was the birthplace of Blues music. 3 Chicago - After slavery was abolished, many people travelled north to Chicago where there were more opportunities. This was called the Great Migration. This was when Blues music started to change, becoming more upbeat and adding more electronic instruments. 4 New York - During the great migration, many Blues musicians travelled to New York as this was the hubfor recording and publishing Blues music. Explanation 1 Slavery started in the 1600s and continued until 1865 when slavery was made illegal after the American Civil War. 2 Early instruments heard here included harmonica, acoustic guitar and singing - this was because it was cheap and easy to make music! 3 Some common instruments in the Chicago Blues included electric guitar, bass guitar, trumpets, trombones, drum kit and piano.
