O estame é composto pela antera e pelo filete. O conjunto dos estames denomina-se androceu

Os grãos de pólen quando atingem o estigma emitem um tubo polínico que cresce até chegar a um dos óvulos que estão no ovário. No interior deste tubo está um núcleo sexual masculino que irá unir-se ao núcleo sexual feminino contido em um dos óvulos, ocorrendo a fecundação e a formação do ovo.

O carpelo é composto pelo estigma, filete e ovário. O conjunto dos carpelos denomina-se gineceu.
