Explicación

El círculo principal es el paralelo 0°, Ecuador o línea ecuatorial, y divide la Tierra en hemisferio Norte-Sur, midiendo la latitud de un sitio.

El semicírculo principal es el meridiano 0° o de Greenwich, y divide la Tierra en dos hemisferios: este y oeste, midiendo la longitud de un sitio.

Se encuentra principalmente al norte del círculo polar ártico, ocupando el área entre Europa, Asia y América del Norte.​

Aunque popularmente parece que no se mezclan, sí lo hacen de forma lenta y continua, creando un "frente oceánico" visible.

Es el segundo más grande de la Tierra, cubriendo aproximadamente el 20% de la superficie del planeta y separando América de Europa y África.

Ocupa la tercera parte de su superficie y se extiende aproximadamente 15 500 kilómetros desde el mar de Bering limitando con el Glacial Ártico por el norte, hasta los márgenes congelados del mar de Ross y limitando por el sur con la Antártida.
