Sam First, clean the anvils and spindle to ensure accurate readings. Alex Place the object between the spindle and anvil, and lightly rotate the thimble until it just contacts the object. Sam Always avoid over-tightening. Stop when you feel gentle resistance and no more threads turn. Alex Check for zero error by closing the micrometer fully and looking at the reading on the sleeve. Sam If the zero line doesn’t align, note the zero error and subtract it from your measurement. Alex Read the sleeve scale first, then the thimble scale for the precise value. Sam Add the readings: sleeve (in mm) plus thimble reading times the least count. Alex Common least count is 0.01 mm, so your final measurement should be precise to two decimals. Sam Always align your eye with the measurement to prevent parallax error and record the result with a units tag.
