Dear student,
To deepen your understanding of assessment, CEFR-aligned rubrics, and textbook analysis, read the following imagined dialogue between two English teachers. Their conversation represents two different ways of understanding assessment and materials: one focused mainly on grades and textbook use, and another focused on learning, feedback, adaptation, and context.
As you read, identify how each teacher understands diagnostic, formative, and summative assessment, as well as the role of rubrics and materials in a micro-teaching lesson.
Context
Two English teachers are preparing a 15-minute micro-lesson for A2 learners on “Describing your favorite place.” They are sitting in a café with a textbook, a CEFR-based rubric, and three possible images for the lesson: a textbook castle, a real local market, and a simple clip art house.
Professor Grade
I have the perfect plan. We teach vocabulary for five minutes, ask students to write a paragraph, grade it, and finish. Assessment should be clear: correct or incorrect.
Professor Black
Clear, yes. But assessment is not only about grading. Before students write, we need to know what they already know. A question like “What words do you already know for places?” can work as diagnostic assessment.
Professor Grade
Diagnostic assessment in a 15-minute lesson? That sounds like a luxury. The real assessment is the final paragraph.
Professor Black
The final paragraph is summative assessment, but what happens during the lesson also matters. If students receive feedback while writing, that is formative assessment because it helps them improve before the final product.
Professor Grade
Fine. I can assess with a simple rubric: Excellent, Good, Bad. It is fast and easy.
Professor Black
Fast, yes, but not very useful. A CEFR-aligned rubric should describe observable performance. For A2 writing, descriptors should show what students can do, such as using short sentences, familiar vocabulary, and basic connectors.

So I should not write: The student writes badly and makes many mistakes?
Professor Black
No. That does not guide learning. A better descriptor would be: The student writes short, simple sentences about a familiar place, with basic errors that do not usually block meaning.

What about materials? I found a textbook image of a perfect castle. It is clean, colorful, and easy to understand.
Professor Black
It may be accessible, but is it culturally relevant? A real photo of a local market, park, or public square may connect better with students’ lives. We can scaffold it with a word bank, sentence starters, and guiding questions.

So the textbook is not useless, but I should not use it passively. I can adapt it, choose more relevant materials, and use assessment to guide learning, not only to grade.
