ทะเลทรายขนาดใหญ่ทางตอนเหนือของแอฟริกา มีภูมิอากาศแห้งแล้ง ฝนน้อย และมีอุณหภูมิแตกต่างกันมากระหว่างกลางวันกับกลางคืน

พื้นที่ราบลุ่มตามแนวแม่น้ำไนล์ มีน้ำและตะกอนดินที่เหมาะต่อการเกษตร จึงเป็นบริเวณสำคัญต่อการตั้งถิ่นฐานของประชากร
