Nel 1497 Michelangelo ricevette dal cardinale Jean Bilhères de Lagraulas l'incarico di scolpire " una Vergene Maria Vestita , con un Christo morto in braccio , grande quanto sia uno homo giusto " . Commissionò la statua della Pietà per collocarla nella cappella di Santa Petronilla , in Vaticano . Questa chiesa apparteneva ai re di Francia e si trovava al lato del transetto della vecchia Basilica di San Pietro . Si stavano avvicinando le celebrazioni per il giubileo del 1500 e molti pellegrini francesi ( visitare ) la cappella : la Pietà di Michelangelo Buonarroti gli ( presentare come un capolavoro offerto da un loro conterraneo . Nel contratto per la commissione della statua , il banchiere Jacopo Galli aveva garantito al cardinale che ( essere ) : " la più bella opera di marmo che sia hoge in Roma et che maestro nissuno la faria megliore hoge " Il Michelangelo scultore era incredibilmente esigente nella scelte delle materie prime ed impiegò ben nove mesi per scegliere il blocco di marmo e trasportarlo dalle cave di Carrara a Roma . Il contratto ufficiale per la realizzazione della Pietà vaticana venne firmato nell'agosto del 1498 e prevedeva un solo anno per la consegna dell'opera . Dalle ricevute di pagamento non risulta chiaro se lo scultore abbia rispettato la data di consegna : ricevette un pagamento dalla banca Ghinucci , esecutrice testamentaria del cardinale Bilhères , nel luglio del 1500 e questa ( pare ) la data più verosimile per il completamento dell'opera . C'è però un insolito pagamento dello stesso Michelangelo a un certo " Sandro muratore " , che compare qui per la prima e ultima volta nei suoi conti , il 6 agosto 1499 : ( pare ) essere stato pagato per installare la statua della Pietà nella chiesa di Santa Petronilla . In questo caso le scadenze contrattuali ( rispettare ) . Curiosamente , in quello stesso giorno , il 6 agosto 1499 , Jean Bilhères morì .
