Las palabras agudas , graves , esdrújulas y sobresdrújulas se diferencian por su sílaba acentuada o tónica .
El acento es la mayor intensidad con la que se pronuncia una sílaba dentro de una palabra aislada o un monosílabo dentro de su contexto fónico . Por ello se le llama también acento de intensidad . Se suele producir , además , una elevación del tono de voz o una mayor duración en la emisión de esa sílaba .
Reglas generales :

a ) Palabras son las polisílabas cuya última sílaba es tónica . Ejemplos : reloj , balón , cantáis , catedral , París .

b ) Palabras llanas o son aquellas cuya penúltima sílaba es tónica . Ejemplos : césped , cabello , estepa , sortijas , inútil .

c ) Palabras son aquellas cuya antepenúltima sílaba es tónica . Ejemplos : sábado , helicóptero , cuídate , rápido , esdrújula .

d ) Palabras son aquellas en las que es tónica alguna de las sílabas anteriores a la antepenúltima . Ejemplos : dígamelo , cómetelo , llévesemela .
