Costa Ricans or Indigenous people of Costa Rica , are the people who lived in what is now Costa Rica prior to European and African contact and the descendants of those peoples who around the country . Costa Ricans strive to keep their cultural traditions , language and alive .
Costa Rica's 24 indigenous territories account for some 6 . 7% of the national territory , and eight different peoples in them . Seven of these indigenous peoples are of Chibchense origin , that is the , the , the , the , the Brunca , the Ngöbe , and the Teribe . The eight peoples are of Meso - American origin , the Chorotega , who live in Matambú . Nowadays , they in some areas far from the big cities and the groups are smaller during the years . Some of the Indigenous have and go out to live in other places . The ones who still live in the for living are hunter gatherers , create beautiful with carved wood . The Huetar , the Maleku , the Bribri , the Cabécar , the Brunca , the Ngöbe , and the Teribe , learn how to survive with their own . While indigenous people have for legal recognition of their rights , Costa Rica did sign the UN Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples in 2007 .
