En todas las palabras hay una sílaba , llamada así porque se pronuncia con mayor que las otras , es decir , se pronuncia más fuerte . Según la ubicación de esta sílaba tónica , las palabras se clasifican en : , que se acentúan en la última sílaba : cantor , emoción ; , que se acentúan en la penúltima sílaba : mano , césped ; esdrújulas , que se acentúan en la sílaba : cáscara , púrpura .
En los textos escritos , la marca gráfica del acento es una tilde , que se coloca conforme a las siguientes reglas ortográficas :
- Las palabras agudas llevan tilde cuando terminan en n , s o ( por ejemplo bailó , compás , menú ) .
- Las palabras graves llevan tilde cuando no en n , s o vocal ( por ejemplo árbol , césped , álbum ) .
- Las esdrújulas llevan tilde ( por ejemplo púrpura , pájaro , sábado ) .
