Football is the most sport in the world , and playing or watching football is a regular pastime for hundreds of millions of people in many countries .
The games is played between two teams of players each . The aim of the game is simple , each team tries to score a by kicking a small ball into a rectangular net , called the goal , defended by the other team . The team that scores the most goals during a 90 game wins .
The players that make up a football team play in various roles . Standing next to the team's own goal will be the , it is his job to stop the other team scoring . He is the only player allowed to touch the ball with his hands .
In front of the goalkeeper are the , they try to stop the other team from attacking , and take the ball away from them if they do .
In the middle of the pitch are the - they try to control the game , and move the ball forward towards the other team's goal .
Finally there are the , or forwards . They are the ones trying to score goals by shooting - kicking the ball at the other team's goal . Sometimes a will try to knock the ball into the goal with his , this is called a header .
The game has lots of rules , and sometimes the players break them , for instance by touching the ball with their , or kicking an opposing player ! To keep order and make decisions about goals and so on , there will be one man on the pitch who isn't part of either team . He is called the .
