Each debater gets three minutes after his/her opponent's constructive speech. The time can be used for clarification or to set up an argument. 2 The purpose of the speech is to make and support your main arguments in favor of the resolution (when you are affirmative) or against the resolution (when you are negative). 3 The side that supports the resolution 4 The topic of the debate. This sets forth the issues to be discussed in the debate and the respective sides affirmative and negative teams will take. 5 These speeches are shorter speeches later in the debate in which debaters argue over issues that were built during the constructive speeches. 5 4 3 2 1
