USES

The superlative grade denotes a quality at its highest degree and is formed using the article “the” in front of the superlative form of the adjective

4

USES

We can use superlative adjectives when talking about three or more things (not two things).

5

USES

We use a superlative to say that a thing or person is the most of a group.

6

STRUCTURE

Noun (subject) + verb + the + superlative adjective + noun (object).

The group that is being compared with can be omitted if it is clear from the context

EXAMPLES:

  • My house is the largest one in our neighborhood.
  • This is the smallest box I've ever seen.
  • Your dog ran the fastest of any dog in the race.
  • We all threw our rocks at the same time.
  • My rock flew the highest.

NOTE

Some qualities cannot vary in intensity or degree because they are extremes, absolutes or classifying adjectives. These qualities are known as non-gradable adjectives and they don’t have either comparative or superlative forms.
