Why do artists draw sketches?

Have you ever wondered why artists draw sketches before doing the final work?

The Outline

Should I write an outline before writing the essay?

Drawing, like writing an essay, needs a skeleton or an outline.

Writers know that it is important to outline the essay to see if their ideas are well organized and if the paragraphs discuss the thesis statement.

Before learning how to write an outline, let’s see the different components of it.

The outline components

Keeping in mind that your final assignment is to write an essay, you must think on how to write your ideas, how many paragraphs to write, and how to begin and end your essay.  Here an example of how to do it: Writing an outline.   (take a look at the previous slide)

As you can see, in an outline there are three main sections: Introduction, Body and Conclusion.

 1. Introduction:

it introduces the topic to be discussed and the central idea, which is the THESIS STATEMENT of the essay.

2.Body:

this is made up of the Supporting ideas. These develop various aspects of the THESIS STATEMENT. They may discuss causes, effects, reasons, examples, process, classifications, or points of comparison or contrast.

3.Conclusion:

this idea must conclude the thought developed in the essay. It is the closing word.
5

The Thesis Statement

Now, let's focus on the central idea of the outline:

The Thesis Statement

6

Supporting ideas

The Body of your essay:
The Supporting Ideas

This is the heart of your essay. The function of the Supporting ideas is to explain, illustrate, discuss, or prove the THESIS STATEMENT.

Keep in mind these points about the Supporting ideas:

1.      Each Supporting idea discusses ONLY ONE aspect of the main topic. For example, you are writing an essay about the effects of smoking cigarettes on a person’s health, then each supporting idea would have as its topic ONE effect.

2.      The Supporting ideas should echo the thesis statement. If your thesis statement is “Cigarette smoking is a destructive habit”, then each supporting idea should have something to do with the destructiveness of the effects.

The Conclusion

Just as the introduction functions to open the essay discussion by introducing the THESIS STATEMENT, so the concluding idea wraps up the discussion, bringing the development to a logical end.

But what does one say in a conclusion? Here are some points about the conclusion to keep in mind.

1.      The conclusion can restate the main points (subtopics) discussed: This restatement should be brief; after all, you have already discussed them at length.

2.      A conclusion can restate the thesis: Generally to avoid sounding repetitions, it is  a good idea to restate the thesis in different words.

3.      A conclusion should not, however, bring up a new topic.

For example, an essay about the nice things to see in Mexico could conclude as follows:

There are, of course, many more things to visit while you are in Mexico, but the beach at Progreso, the Aztec ruin, and the famous monument represent some of the more significant  and beautiful sights to see. When you go to Mexico, visit these sights and you will be guaranteed a fond memory after you go home.

Let\'s get started!

Ok, it's time to start. So let's get started by brainstorming the ideas you may have about a topic.

Assigment:

Think on a social issue (Abortion, Global warming, Gay marriage, etc).

Write down all the ideas that come to your mind. No matter the order, spelling or grammar. Then, organize those ideas by categories.

Finally think and write a good thesis statment about that topic (take a stance and write it!)
