He was born in Edinburgh and grew up in and was initially home - schooled by his father who was a . He later went to high school as well as the University of Edinburgh . Why did he invent the telephone ? This is quite an amazing story . He first became interested in the science of as both his mother and his were . He desired that deaf people could communicate . His experiments in sound allowed him to send signals down a telegraph cable . After the University , he managed to get some money and found someone to help him . His name was Thomas a skilled electrician . The two of them together came up with ( invented ) the telephone ! Many other scientists had very similar ideas and he went very fast to the pattent to make sure he was the first one there to resgister his invention . Bell and the people who had lent him the money , called investors , formed the Bell Telephone . Today , the telephones do not need cables and work with radio signals . About 30 years ago the wireless telephones were so and not all the people could buy them . So families only had one telephone at home . Today everybody has a phone , although some people still has a phone in their house .
