El treball de lutier té molta relació amb , tot i que també té una base científica , ja que els instruments musicals es construeixen amb normes concretes que tenen a veure amb les , amb l'acústica i amb la geometría ; sense aquestes regles no es podría aconseguir el so que es busca . Per això l'evolució d'instruments és paral·lela als avenços .

Avui dia la construcció d'instruments és un procés , cosa que n'abarateix els costos . Però encara existeixen lutiers que segueixen treballant als seus de manera artesana .
