Surge como defensa del sentimiento y la imaginación frente a la razón. Tiene orígenes en Alemania e Inglaterra, posteriormente se da en Francia, Italia y España. Se caracteriza por la apertura y libre expresión de sentimientos y manifestaciones de amor hacia la naturaleza.

Este movimiento poético dentro de sus principales características en su poesía es que está contra lo norma. No hay rima, puede prescindir de la puntuación o jugar con las mayúsculas y minúsculas, no tiene regularidades métricas e incluso inventa palabras nueva y juega con faltas de ortografía. Es también conocido como superrealismo.

Su principal representante es Rubén Darío (1867-1916), es un movimiento propio de Hispanoamérica, persigue renovar formas y palabras llegar a utilizar el verso libre, los poetas de esta corriente estaban insatisfechos con el Romanticismo y Realismo.

Surge en Italia, uno de sus principales representantes es Tommaso Marinetti, cronológicamente es el primer movimiento de vanguardia poética, algunos de sus poemas tratan sobre temas la maquina y el movimiento.

Fue iniciado por el escritor rumano Tristán Tzara (1896-1963), tomó la palabra dadá que es solo un ruido, para manifestar que la poesía no necesita una serie de reglas para ser creada.

Fue precedido por el manierismo. Se manifestó en todas las artes de la época: Arquitectura, Literatura. Poesía y Pintura. Sor Juana Inés de la Cruz es una de las representantes en la poesía de este movimiento poético.
