The is the thin layer of air , land , and water at Earth's surface where living things exist .
A biome is a large area of the biosphere characterized by their ( living , all organisms in the environment , including bacteria , , and animals ) and ( non - living parts of the environment , such as air , water , , light , and temperature ) components .
Abiotic factors that Influence Biomes
1 . The main one is climate ; the long - term conditions in an area , including annual ( yearly ) temperature and ( rainfall , snow , mist , and fog ) .
2 . Other important abiotic factors include :
? ? the distance north and south from the equator . It influences both temperature and precipitation . The tropical zone has very warm and high precipitation .
? ? the height above sea . Higher areas have less air , so retain less heat . Windward sides of mountains are wet , leeward sides are very dry .
