Tim O\'Reilly

The story goes that the term “web 2.0” was invented by Tim O’Reilly, no stranger to the world of technology and a million other subjects, if the seemingly endless list of books and video available from O’Reilly Publishing is any indication.

Brainstorming

In 2005 in his article Designs Patterns and Business Models for the Next Generation Software, Mr. O’Reilly himself explained that he and Dale Dougherty, an O’Reilly VP, invented the term in a brainstorming session motivated by the bursting of the dot-com bubble in 2001.

Birth of an era

The result of that brainstorming session was the birth of the Web 2.0 Conference or Summit, the first of which was held in 2004. It appears the conference was held yearly until 2011 and there has not been once since.
