Los romanos , en algunos casos , usaban a forma de unidas con charnela ( ) . A veces eran trípticos o , más raro aún , . La palabra , a la que luego se le dio el significado actual , se aplico en la Antigüedad al de árbol sobre el que se escribía ( en latín caudex , por contracción codex ) , se aplicó después , por extensión , a estas tablillas antes que a la forma de libro que surgió en a principios del siglo I d . de C . y que se conoce con este nombre . Según Aristófanes en su obra Las nubes , que fue compuesta en 423 a . de C . , los griegos también usaron estas tablillas de madera . Se han hallado en una mina de oro de Transilvana algunos ejemplares de tablillas romanas antiguas , bien conservada que corresponden al año 167 a . de C . También se conservan tablillas de origen alemán , muchas de ellas de la Edad , lo que quiere decir que su uso no desapareció con el advenimiento del rollo ni con el del códice . En cuanto a las tablillas de arcilla , afortunadamente han llegado a nosotros en grandes cantidades , pues aunque los palacios en que se guardaban fueron derruidos y muchas veces quemados , permanecieron sepultadas hasta tiempos recientes , en que , al hacer excavaciones , se han hallado verdaderos tesoros literarios .
