Before alarm clocks , how did people wake up ? Well , many people worry about time so much because they worked on the land . However , as people started to work in factories , being on time became more important . Because many workers be late getting to work , factory owners employed " knocker - upper " . This person used a long stick to wake people up by knocking on their bedroom windows . This seems funny now , but back in those days any other way !
